Preface

“Toccatina” and “Fughette op.19 “ were created on occasion of the “prima la musica”, the Austrian equivalent of the German “Jugend musiziert” (a competition for young musicians) : A piano duo, two girls aged 15 and 17, who were taught by me, took part in the competition.

The “Toccatina” offers melodious and attractive exercises , for advanced students. It represents a contemporary form of musical expression without dissonant extremes. The pulsating rhythm offers player and listener alike a certain “support”.

In the “Fughette” for four players, the fact that each melody has one hand at its disposal, fascinated me. As a result no compromises are necessary (compare with the fugues of Bach).

This four- handed arrangement allows an interesting opportunity to integrate non-linear motives (accord, double-chord) in the fugue theme. The premiere of this work occurred during the competition “prima la musica” in Upper Austria in 2003. The “Duo deciso”, trained by me was rewarded with the first prize.
