Composer Christoph Busching (*1956)
Preface

Toccata, Adagio and Finale were created on occasion of the participation of a piano duo, that I had coached, in the competition “prima la musica” the Austrian equivalent of the German “Jugend musiziert” (Competition for young musicians). The members of the duo were two girls aged eight and nine. Although having studied the existing contemporary music critically, I was unable to find a suitable piece of music that •

  • children could master from the level of musical legibility
  • offered a technically high standard but was fun to play
  • would be effective on the stage
  • offered a complete musical unit regarding motive and theme.

And so I became active myself.

With this work I hope to be able to fill a gap and at the same time I want to offer my dedicated colleagues and their students a rewarding exercise. My own student piano duos have often performed the work in public and were very successful and not only because of the witty end.

March 2004 Christoph Busching.
