Hermann Mohr (1830-1896)

Hermann Mohr

was born on 9th October 1830 in Nienstedt near Sangershausen in Germany and died in Philadelphia U.S.A. He attended the Teacher Training College in Eisleben and moved to Berlin, in 1850 In Berlin he founded the “Luisenstädtische” Conservatorium and in 1870 he established the” Mohrsche” Music Conservatory, which was named after him. Hermann Mohr conducted male-voice choirs. From 1889 on he lived in Philadelphia and was a tutor at Zweckwers Academy of Music.

Mohr is mainly renowned for his compositions for male-voices, although he also wrote chamber music, works for piano and a cantata “Bergmannsgruß” (Miners’ Greeting).
